About Publishing Ireland
Membership and Management
Publishing Ireland was founded as CLÉ - Irish Book Publishers' Association in 1970 as a response to the need felt by publishers to share expertise and resources in order to benefit from opportunities and solve problems which were of common concern to all. Membership of Publishing Ireland has grown significantly and comprises most of the major publishing houses in Ireland with a mixture of trade, general and academic publishers as members.

Publishing Ireland is a cross-border organisation, with one full-time Administrative Assistant, one part-time Administrator and one part-time Projects Manager as well as a Board drawn from the member companies' staff and various committees and working groups. Publishing Ireland is run on the principles of inclusion and accountability, responding to and anticipating members' needs.

What does Publishing Ireland do for members?

Information
Contact details for other publishers, distributors, agents, booksellers, wholesalers, media contacts, arts organisations and sister organisations in other countries are provided free of charge to members on request. Publishing Ireland produces a weekly email and acts as a conduit for information of general interest to the industry. Information is also made available directly to publisher members through the Members Area of this website. Contact info@publishingireland.com for your login details.

Marketing
Sales and promotions around themed events, for example, the Dublin Book Festival, the new Great Irish Book Week, direct selling and promotion at consumer fairs in Dublin and the North, an annual consumer book catalogue, Author/Editor touring, inclusion on the Publishing Ireland website along with links back to members' sites. Involvement in joint-marketing projects including Irish Language marketing and international marketing, specifically London Book Fair and Frankfurt Book Fair.

Training
Publishing Ireland organises training courses and seminars at regular intervals throughout the year, covering all areas of publishing. Publishing Ireland consults the membership annually to discover their training requirements. The tutors for these courses have industry and teaching experience both in Ireland and abroad. Numbers are limited to allow for individual attention.

International
Publishing Ireland organises an annual collective stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair and the London Book Fair. Publishing Ireland is a member of the International Publishers' Association and the Federation of European Publishers, thereby gaining access to comparative information on the industry elsewhere, which is made available to members.

Statistics
Publishing Ireland undertakes a bi-ennial survey of the Irish Book Publishing Industry. Figures are released on market share, growth (global and by category of publishing) and employment rates. All who participate in the survey receive a statement as to their company's relative performance. Publishing Ireland uses these figures in negotiations, on behalf of the industry, with Government bodies and agencies.

Copyright
Publishing Ireland provides training on contracts and copyright for members, lobbies the relevant government departments and liaises with the libraries, the Irish Copyright Licensing Agency (of which it is a founder member) and Multimedia Copyright Clearance Ireland, on all issues of copyright which affect publishers.

Publishing Ireland Membership
To qualify for full membership of Publishing Ireland you must be:

  1. actively publishing, a minimum of 2 titles per calendar year
  2. trading for more than one year
  3. actively offering the minimum 2 titles for sale
  4. the minimum two titles must be written by an author other than an employee of the publisher, including the publisher themselves
  5. the publisher must have undertaken the financial risk associated with the publication of the two minimum titles

People who are engaged in related activities (e.g. freelance proofreading, editorial, publicity or illustration work) can apply for associate membership of Publishing Ireland.

Membership Rates
Membership rates are based on the number of employees in an individual company. Rates range from €100 to €1,800. Members are entitled to avail of all of the services outlined opposite, to participate in any of the committees and working groups and, of course, are always welcome to suggest new ways in which we can be of help.
