Vacancy – Editor
Dublin Examining Board, the leading supplier of mock Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations in Ireland, is recruiting an Editor to expand its editorial team.  Based in our Lucan office, full and part-time candidates will be considered.  

The Editor will work in all areas of the editorial process, bringing work from commissioning through to publication.  The successful candidate will liaise directly with authors and educators, editing and rewriting text as required (hard copy and on-screen).  It is envisioned that the Editor will have full editing responsibility for a number of exam papers in Maths and Business subjects.

Excellent attention to detail and at least 2 – 4 years’ experience in copyediting / proofreading in a similar role is essential.  Experience in Word is required, while other programs used include Quark Xpress, Corel, Photoshop, etc.  Experience as an educator in the subject areas of Maths and Business, in education publishing or working in Irish would be an advantage.

The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Senior Editor who will be based at our office in Cork. The Senior Editor will report to the Managing Director and will be primarily responsible for the editorial quality and integrity of our output, as well as editorial strategy and list management. The role would suit someone who has 4 or 5 years editorial experience and is now looking to take the next step in their publishing career.

The successful candidate will have experience in editing and typesetting history and current affairs, have an understanding of the current challenges facing the publishing business and have strong attention to detail and commitment to excellence. Finally, the successful candidate will thrive on the excitement of working with a values driven team, building a legacy for Irish cultural life.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Overseeing manuscript and content development for all new titles
  • Controlling incoming manuscripts and managing author relationships
  • Editing and/or proof reading all books, both copy edit and structural edit as necessary
  • Contracting new titles and managing the backlist
  • Managing freelancers
  • General Administration
Essential Skills
  • Demonstrated copy editing and proofreading skills
  • Mastery of English grammar and punctuation; strong writing skills
  • Computer skills: Adobe Creative Suite 2, 3 or 4, Microsoft Office, both Mac and PC proficient
  • Meticulous attention to detail, commitment to producing quality product, conscious of tight deadlines
  • Ability to multitask and maintain multiple similar projects
  • Bachelor’s degree with concentration in English and/or History (Master’s preferable)
