More than 160 European personalities caught reading their favourite books!
The Federation of European Publishers will launch its “Get Caught Reading” exhibition on the 18th of June in the presence of Ms Fadila Laanan, Belgian Minister for Culture, the
Audiovisual Sector, Health and Equal Opportunities, Ms Doris Pack, Chair of the European Parliament Committee on Culture and Education, Mr Piotr Marciszuk, President of the
Federation of European Publishers and Mr Luigi Berlinguer, Member of the European Parliament.
More than 160 European personalities, including Mr José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, Mr Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, and Mr
Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, have come together as part of the campaign to share their passion for reading.Their photographs will be displayed at the European Parliament between the 17th and 20th of June 2013, with an official launch on the 18th of June 2013 at 18.30. On this occasion, every book-lover will have the opportunity to be ‘caught reading’ and take home a picture of themselves with their favourite book.
Organised under the patronage of MEP Luigi Berlinguer, and supported by Beterlsmann, Librius and Pearson, the campaign has two main purposes: To promote and celebrate
reading by European citizens, and to increase the importance of books and reading on the political agenda. We want to remind people that reading is both a real joy and the gateway to a world of opportunities. In the words of Piotr Marciszuk, President of the Federation of European Publishers: “We must not lose sight of what is truly important: The ability to read, be it for education, for work, or for leisure.”
Launched by the Federation of European Publishers, an independent, non-commercial umbrella association of 28 book publishers’ associations in the European Union and
European Economic Area, the project originates from an US campaign organised by the Association of American Publishers, at the initiative of its former President and CEO Patricia
Schroeder. The FEP successfully ran the first European edition in 2005. Citizens are invited to send their own photos and be part of the campaign by sharing their
passion for reading!
