Department: Production Position: Production Controller – Gill Education Type of Vacancy: Permanent Position Reporting to: Head of Production

Job summary

Gill, Ireland’s leading publisher of educational and trade titles, is seeking a proactive and organised Production Controller for its demanding production department. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in the production of quality resources for the educational market. They will be the controller of production quality for the business and will oversee the production processes from edited text through to print and digital publication. Alongside the education editorial team, they will manage a schedule of projects and have responsibility for the timely delivery of high-quality products.

 

Key responsibilities/tasks

  • Managing publishing schedules
  • Assigning designers, illustrators and typesetters and issuing briefs accordingly
  • Pricing out new education titles
  • Full responsibility for pricing and placing print orders for the backlist
  • Product architecture – advising and guiding regarding specifications
  • Overseeing photo research on all new education titles
  • Managing the budget for all images and negotiating bulk deals
  • Overseeing copyright clearance of images
  • Managing the archiving of print and digital assets
  • Overseeing the quality control of images and files for print
  • Preparing images and files for digital resources
  • Overseeing the creation of digital resources and eBooks
  • Checking final PDFs and plotter proofs
  • Tallying and approving invoices
  • Using design skills where appropriate
  • Keeping up-to-date with trends and developments in print, digital and production processes
  • Managing any other tasks assigned by the Head of Production/Production Director

 

Key competencies/experience

  • Highly organised, with a proven ability to multitask and work to deadlines
  • Efficient and capable of working as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills
  • Confidence to build relationships with suppliers
  • Ability to work across functions to find solutions
  • High level of literacy with excellent attention to detail
  • Strong IT skills with a good working knowledge of all Microsoft applications. Experience in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop would be a distinct advantage
  • Proven track record of adaptability within a busy work environment
  • At least 2 years’ experience in publishing production or a similar environment
  • Third-level qualification or equivalent
