Position Summary

We are publishers of the best contemporary non-fiction writing and are peer reviewed for academic excellence. We are the publishing imprint of University College Dublin, Ireland.

UCD Press publishes contemporary scholarly writing in a broad range of subjects including history, literary studies, music, science and more recently migration studies and gender studies. Our Press has a special focus on Irish Studies. Our books are produced to the highest standards of design, editing, and printing while being distributed, marketed and publicised nationally and internationally.

Reporting to the Executive Editor and Office Manager/Editor the post will involve a diverse and challenging range of duties largely related to office administration, editorial duties as well as preparing marketing material and maintaining and increasing our online presence. The appointee will assist with day-to-day office administration, ongoing editorial work as well as help in organising launch events, conferences and festivals.

 

Seeking an open, hard-working and enthusiastic person who is eager to develop a broad range of skills and experience in publishing, as well as getting exposure to all areas of working in an academic publishing house.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

* Assisting the Executive Editor and Office Manager/Editor in the day-to-day running of the office: answering phones, emails and assisting in all administration duties of the office.

* Assisting the Executive Editor and Office Manager/Editor with the current publishing programme – support in editing, proofreading, cover and internal design.

* Website and publicity: assisting with marketing and updating the website; processing sales of books through the website; helping to prepare flyers and other marketing material for launch events, academic conference and book fairs.

* Events: assisting the Executive Editor and Office Manager/Editor in the organisation and publicity of book launches and other events.

* Dispatching books: it will be necessary to pack up books from time to time – books for review, complimentary copies to authors, publicity copies, and some books for sale.

* Helping to design and prepare promotional flyers and seasonal catalogue for distribution

* Social Media: increasing the Press’s online social media presence and maintaining that presence through our website and other online forums

 

Selections Criteria    

Mandatory

* A third-level degree (beneficial if in publishing and/or the humanities/social sciences, however applicants with design qualifications would also be considered)

* A high level of competence in written and spoken English

* Proven technological proficiency and computer literacy, knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel

* Ability to work independently as well as in a team

* Ability to cope with ambiguity and change and to maintain a high level of professionalism when working under pressure

* Excellent interpersonal and communications skills both written and oral

* Demonstrate tact, discretion, confidentiality and good judgement

* Demonstrated numeracy skills

 

 Desirable

* Knowledge of European languages, particularly Irish

* Some previous experience of editing (any exposure to printing, design, typesetting also beneficial)

* Some knowledge of Indesign and Photoshop beneficial

* Previous experience of maintaining and updating a website, and setting up and maintaining social media sites

* Event organising and managing events successfully
