Position: Head of Production, Gill Education

Starting Month: January, 2018

Reporting to: Production Director

Gill, Ireland’s leading publisher of educational and trade titles, is seeking a Head of Production for its demanding education production department. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in managing the production of books for the educational market. They will be the controller of production quality for the business, supervising and overseeing the production process from edited text through to print and digital publication. They will manage a schedule of projects in liaison with the education editorial team and with them have responsibility for delivery of projects to quality and on time.

Key responsibilities/tasks

  • Compiling individual production schedules and tightly controlling production budget.
  • Managing the publishing schedule alongside the editorial team.
  • Assigning designers, illustrators and typesetters, agreeing prices and issuing briefs for all education products (print and digital).
  • Ensuring products (both print and digital) meet their given production specifications and are delivered on time.
  • Negotiating best print prices with different printers and placing print orders.
  • Managing schedules with printers to ensure on-time deliveries.
  • Continual sourcing and trialling of new suppliers and freelancers.
  • Providing leadership and direction for relevant internal and freelance production personnel, including line management, development, training, coaching and mentoring.
  • Keeping in touch with trends and developments in print, digital and production processes.

  • Flexibility required to work successfully within a fast-paced, high-pressured environment and the ability to manage many projects running concurrently.
  • Proven understanding and interest in educational publishing and technology.
  • Numerate, with proven commercial acumen.
  • Excellent eye for detail.



  • At least seven years’ production experience in educational publishing, some of which must be at a senior level.
  • An in-depth understanding of typesetting, repro, digital and print technologies.
  • Experience in individual and team management.
  • Experience in freelance and supplier management.
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and InDesign.
  • Third Level Qualification.
