In
2005 CLÉ, the trade association for Irish book publishers,
established the CLÉ Book Industry Awards as an initiative
to promote excellence in the publishing industry. The Awards are
aimed at the technical and creative aspects of book publishing
where the work of publishers and their employees, is acknowledged
by their peers.
In
this, the third year of the Awards, publishers submitted books
for consideration in the categories of Illustration, Cover Design,
Production and Publicity Campaign as well as an overall category
of Publishers’ Book of the Year.
The
short-list for the Awards was created by a Selection Committee
comprising Maria Dickenson, Buyer, Easons Wholesale; John Cotter,
Central Buyer, Book Centre Group; Senan Molony, Author and Journalist
and Alison Walsh, Literary Critic and Columnist, Sunday Independent.
Book publishers, librarians, writers, booksellers, freelance editors
and illustrators then voted from the short-lists.
The
Awards took place at the CLÉ Conference on Saturday 17
February in the Fitzwilliam Hotel, Stephens Green, Dublin 2 at
1.40pm.

Should
Have Got Off at Sydney Parade was the No. 1 bestselling novel
in Ireland in 2006.
“Six
months ago, there were some remote parts of the world that had
never heard the name Ross O'Carroll-Kelly - that's as difficult
to believe as it is tragic. Then, last November, Cliona and Patricia
took me on the road to bring the good news to those few dark corners
of Ireland that God and the ESB forgot. They're two great birds
who can hold their drink and who, despite my antics on the road,
never went telling tales to the tabloids. They wouldn't want to.
I saw their expenses sheet for the trip. It was the greatest work
of fiction produced by anyone for Penguin for a hundred years.”
