Setanta seek to recognise excellence in Irish sports writing
The board of Publishing Ireland has been working with Setanta to help them develop an Irish sports book award. We hope you’ll support the award by submitting your books. Setanta Sports, with the support of Publishing Ireland, are delighted to announce the creation of a new award that will recognise the very best in Irish sports writing. The Setanta Sports Irish Sports Book of the Year will seek to find the best sports book published by an Irish author in 2015, or sports book with an Irish subject matter.
The winning author will receive a €1500 cash prize and a specially commissioned trophy while €10,000 worth of TV advertising on Setanta Sports is also on offer for the winning entry. All shortlisted entries will feature in a television show to be broadcast by Setanta Sports to help drive awareness of the publications.
Setanta Sports are making an initial four year commitment to the new awards scheme.The judging panel for the Setanta Sports Irish Sports Book of the Year will be chaired by Mark Duncan and comprises of sports editors and producers from the print, broadcast and online media. The full list of judges for 2015 is: Adrian Barry (Newstalk), Dave Courtney (Independent Group), Neil Fullerton (Irish Daily Mirror), Robbie Irwin (RTÉ), Tony Leen (Irish Examiner), Malachy Logan (Irish Times), Adrian Russell (The42.ie) and Jack White (Irish Daily Mail).
Brian Quinn, Marketing Operations Director at Setanta Sports commented; “We are passionate about Irish sport and recognise the major role sports writing has to play. That is why we are delighted to make today’s announcement. We feel it is important to promote Irish sports writing which, as we all know, has such an influence on how all fans view and interact with sport.
“We are committing to the Setanta Sports Irish Sports Book of the Year for the next four years with the hope this scheme becomes a permanent feature of the Irish sports writing landscape.“I’d like to thank Publishing Ireland for their support in getting this scheme up and running and our judging panel and its chairman for coming on board.”
The President of Publishing Ireland Patsy Horton added; “Ireland is seen as a country of writers. We currently have some of the best sports writers in the English language. Publishing Ireland welcomes this new award that celebrates excellence in sports writing and joins with Setanta Sports to call on publishers to submit their most talented writers to be considered for this award.”
All sports books written by an Irish author or with an Irish subject matter, published since January 2015 and will be eligible for the award this year. Entries will be sought in September with a long list to be announced in October before a short list is announced in mid-November. The winner of the Setanta Sports Irish Sports Book of the Year 2015 will then be announced in December.
