GDPR for Publishers

Do you need to ask everyone to re-subscribe to mailing lists and/ or delete them by a specified date? What measures need to be taken to protect data in hard copy? What is needed to comply with the regulation with Small business e-commerce sites? These are just some of the questions that may arise for publishers both large and small and so Publishing Ireland has teamed up with Frontier Privacy to tackle these issues and to take you through what policies and procedures you need to have in place coming up to the coming into force of the GDPR this coming May.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force in May 2018 and is a game changer in terms of how organisations must manage and process data not least because of the scope of the GDPR but also the sizeable fines it will introduce. The GDPR will impact businesses across all industries and not only organisations with a physical presence in Europe. Even if you are based outside the EU but are processing the personal data of EU individuals in relation to offering goods/services, or monitoring the behaviour of individuals in the EU, you are also subject to its requirements

The GDPR introduces a two-tier system of fines, depending on the type of non-compliance –

  • For the lower tier of offences, a fine up to the higher of €10,000,000 or 2% of the organisation’s total worldwide annual turnover
  • For the upper tier of offences, there is potential for fines up to the greater of €20,000,000 or 4% of the organisation’s total worldwide annual turnover

Frontier Privacy is an innovative data protection consultancy delivering services in Ireland and internationally for organisations and companies across a range of sectors. Founders Kate Colleary and Aoife Sexton aim to make sure that every organisation, no matter its size, can access expert, proactive and pragmatic data protection solutions. With our legal background, we offer a complete range of data protection services, from assessments to training to representation. We partner with each client to develop a privacy management strategy. We then help our clients to implement a robust accountable privacy programme including all policies, procedures and protocols throughout their organisation. The programme is then rolled out and staff trained on its implementation. This gives our client the confidence to capitalise on the personal data they collect, on optimising it to grow their business and on building trust with their customers.
