eir Sport, with the support of Publishing Ireland has launched the eir Sport Sports Book of the Year, (formerly Setanta Sports Book of the Year) the third year of the award designed to recognise and reward the very best in Irish sports writing.

The eir Sport Sports Book of the Year will seek to find the best sports book published by an Irish author in 2017, or sports book with an Irish subject matter.

The winning author will receive a €1,500 cash prize and a specially commissioned trophy while €10,000 worth of TV advertising on eir Sport is also on offer for the winning entry.

This is the third year of an initial four year commitment by eir Sport to the awards scheme. Last year’s award was claimed by Kerry footballer, Kieran Donaghy for the memorable ‘What Do You Think of That? A book that went onto be one of the bestselling books of 2016. In 2015, former Dublin football keeper John Leonard was awarded for ‘Dub Sub Confidential’.

Glen Killane Managing Director of eir TV & Sport commented; ‘eir Sport is delighted to announce the third year of the eir Sport Sports Book of the Year Award. We’re looking forward to recognising Irish sports writing and excited to see all of the entries.

‘Huge thanks once again, must go to Publishing Ireland for continued their support of the award and we look forward to working with them over the coming months.’

The President of Publishing Ireland Ronan Colgan added; ‘Publishing Ireland is delighted to partner with eir Sport once again this year and together we’re looking for the best sports book to win this award which will hopefully go on to be one of the bestselling books of 2017. This award is about high quality writing and good storytelling and I call on publishers and authors to make sure that their book is in with a chance.’

All sports books written by an Irish author or with an Irish subject matter, published since January 2017 will be eligible for the award this year. Entries will be sought in September with the closing date for entries in early October. A long list will be announced in late-October before a short list is announced in late-November. The winner of the eir Sport Sports Book of the Year 2017 will then be announced in December.
