Educate.ie have a vacancy for a Commissioning Editor. This is an excellent role in a growing publishing house.

Key Responsibilities

Working as part of the wider commissioning and development team, and reporting to the Publisher, the successful candidate will:

  • Research markets and develop new series’ and titles
  • Manage author relationships; source and commission new authors and ensure they work to agreed specifications and submission dates
  • Review and manage new content submissions
  • Recruit and manage content reviewers and ensure they work to agreed dates and specifications
  • Prepare briefing documents and provide suitable ongoing guidance to editorial, production, digital and design staff working on your projects
  • Monitor progress of projects from submission through to launch through regular updates
  • Report regularly to management and escalate queries and issues as need arises
  • Develop beneficial working relationships with the production, editorial and digital departments and act as the owner for your projects to ensure they match their original specifications and meet their deadlines
  • Attend relevant conferences, book fairs, exhibitions and meetings and develop a network of key educational contacts
  • Other duties as required

The role may involve travel (within Ireland), therefore access to a car and full cleaning driving licence is required, as is the flexibility to be available for some evenings and weekends.

Required Skills

  • Excellent editorial, organisational and time-management skills.
  • Some experience of managing or mentoring freelance or in-house editorial staff.
  • Flexible approach and strong people skills with the ability to work across functions effectively.
  • Ability to work on own initiative to co-ordinate various elements required to deliver projects.

 Experience/Qualifications

  • At least 3 years’ experience in educational publishing or similar, some of which must be as a Senior Editor, Development Editor or Commissioning Editor
  • Third Level Qualification in Education, Business, Management, Publishing or a relevant school subject
  • Teaching experience welcome but not essential
