Rights 101 with Ivan O’Brien and Maeve Convery
Monday, 4 December
Poetry Ireland, 11 Parnell Square East
2-5pm
Selling your books to Irish people is great, but how can you make more from the books you publish? Selling rights – whether territorial, language or into other media – is a core part of the world’s publishing business, and a fantastic way to get greater exposure for your authors, and make more money from the books that you put so much energy into producing. The world’s major rights fairs, in London, Frankfurt and (for children’s books) Bologna, are fantastic places to sell, buy and learn. Starting with an introduction to the world of rights, and including some workshopping on your own catalogue, this session should answer you key rights questions, and help you navigate the complex waters of international rights trading.
Join Ivan O’Brien, MD of O’Brien Press and Maeve Convery, Publisher with Roads in Poetry Ireland on 4 December for a half-day afternoon workshop on everything you need to know about rights.
Ivan O’Brien
Ivan joined the O’Brien Press in 2006 as Managing Director. The O’Brien Press was established in 1974, evolving out of a family-run printing and type house, and over the past 32 years has established a reputation for quality and excellence in publishing for adults and children. Ivan is a constant presence at international book fairs and has a wealth of experience in managing rights deals and getting the most out of book fairs.
Maeve Convery
Maeve joined Roads Publishing, an independent publishing house with a focus on design, travel and the arts in 2012. Although Roads is a fledgling presence at books fairs, Maeve and her team have found both London and Frankfurt to be invaluable for their brand. Roads’ titles are distributed throughout the world and selling rights has always been at the core of their activity.
