The Choice by Philly McMahon wins #eirsportsBOTY

Congratulations to Philly McMahon, Niall Kelly, and to Gill Books for winning this year’s eir Sports Book of the Year Award 2017! McMahon’s memoir, entitled The Choice, traces the relationships, tensions, arguments, and chance occurrences that pushed him and his brother John in very different directions: Philly to university, the boardroom, and the hallowed turf of Croke Park; John to exile in London, heartbreak, and, ultimately, tragedy. The Choice was shortlisted for the prize along with two very worthy titles, Barry Ryan’s The Ascent and Jackie Tyrrell’s The Warrior’s Code.

This year’s award was held in collaboration with Publishing Ireland. PI President Ronan Colgan endorsed the association’s continued relationship with eir for the award saying that the winning title would “hopefully go on to be one of the bestselling books of 2017.” In addition to a cash prize of €1,500, this year’s winner will also receive a specially commissioned trophy and €10,000 worth of TV advertising on eir Sport.
