StoryLand is a Belgian subsidiary of MaryDes Designs, a designing and publishing company based in
Ireland, which aims to publish books in a way that gives their authors complete control, allows them to
keep 100{1242e6fa0da84f367e0f1ee6d30a8040af2734be4204b5a1a00eb52a7c2b34a2} of their profits, and retain all rights to their published works. StoryLand provides three primary
publishing formulas: the ‘full-service’ formula, which takes care of all publishing responsibilities,
including marketing and PR; the ‘assistance’ formula, whereby the author is guided in self-publishing; and
the ‘classic’ formula, whereby StoryLand acts like any other classic publishing house, except they pay
the author royalties based on the number of books printed rather than books sold.

The judges praised Storyland for establishing an alternative publishing concept that adapts the
procedure to match the author’s preferences, the type of book they are publishing, and its target audience.
While the author may hand over the responsibility of the publication process to StoryLand, they are able to
stay up-to-date with the development of their book through an online portal. Furthermore, no actions are
taken by the company without the author’s approval. Although its disruptive methods may be unorthodox,
StoryLand has proven itself by becoming the fastest-growing publisher on the Flemish market within its
