Volunteer positions with the Society of Young Publishers, Ireland

Events Officer AND Communications Officer

Do you like socialising with book people? Can you plan a cheeseboard for forty people and spend a
wine budget without breaking a sweat? Are you a killer communicator with a passion for publishing?
We want you. SYP Ireland is looking for both an Events Officer and a Communications Officer to join
our committee. These are voluntary roles.

SYP Ireland is a non-profit, member-funded society that exists to serve the needs and interests of
people who are the early stages of a publishing career, or interested in entering the industry. Much
of what we do involves organising events that help our members to form valuable professional
networks with more experienced publishing colleagues, writers, booksellers, and people from
related creative industries, as well as (just as importantly) to connect with each other and the
publishing community.

Since forming a branch to serve the island of Ireland in 2016, SYP has run events ranging from the
more serious – expert panels, Q&As and training workshops – to the more fun – pub quizzes and
social drinks nights.

The Events Officer will be the primary person responsible for:

  • Maintaining friendly relationships with professional bodies
  •  Researching venues and managing bookings (roughly 6–8 per year)
  • Organising food, transport, thank-you gifts and prizes
  •  Fielding enquiries, where relevant, to emails received to the SYP email inbox
  •  Attending monthly SYP Committee meetings and contributing to our strategy and planning.

The Communications Officer will be responsible for:

  • Managing the social media channels for SYP Ireland, including Facebook and Twitter
  • Communicating information and promote events to SYP Ireland members.
  • Writing, editing, coordinating and publishing content for the quarterly SYP Ireland newsletter to the membership.
  • Fielding enquiries, where relevant, to emails received to the SYP email inbox
  • Attending monthly SYP Committee meetings and contributing to our strategy and planning.

Above all, we’re looking for people with enthusiasm. SYP Ireland is entirely run by our volunteer committee and succeeds on the strength of what we can bring to it. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to the industry or even to SYP – if you’re interested in being part of the team, please drop us a line and let us know at sypire@gmail.com.
